A deep masterpiece out of a few of the most revered film makers in the annals of cinema, Robert Bresson's Au hasard Balthazar follows exactly the donkey Balthazar as he is passed from owner to owner, some sort and some cruel but with motivations beyond his own understanding. Balthazar, whose life parallels that of his protagonist, Marie, is truly a beast of burden, suffering the sins of human kind. But even though his own powerlessness, he accepts his fate nobly.
